Magnesium glycinate is often described as the gentle, highly absorbable form.
Magnesium citrate is often described as the more established option.
Both statements contain more certainty than the evidence comfortably supports.
The useful comparison starts by separating what has actually been measured from what supplement marketing commonly repeats.

There is no strong basis for declaring a universal winner. Magnesium citrate has clearer human bioavailability evidence and is specifically identified by NIH as a relatively well-absorbed form. Magnesium bisglycinate has form-specific human research, but direct evidence proving superior absorption or tolerability versus citrate remains limited.

What this comparison cannot establish
- The literature uses both glycinate and bisglycinate terminology, and commercial products are not necessarily chemically or compositionally identical.
- NIH specifically cites citrate among better-absorbed forms but does not make an equivalent superiority claim for magnesium glycinate.
- The 2018 study that included citrate and bisglycinate was a short single-day crossover comparison and primarily evaluated a proprietary sucrosomial magnesium formulation.
- The 2025 bisglycinate sleep trial compared bisglycinate with placebo, not with magnesium citrate.

First, compare elemental magnesium rather than compound weight
A magnesium supplement does not consist of elemental magnesium alone.
The mineral is attached to another compound.
With citrate, magnesium is associated with citric acid. Glycinate products use magnesium associated with glycine and are also frequently marketed using the term magnesium bisglycinate.
The number that matters on the Supplement Facts panel is elemental magnesium.
That is the amount Bextera will use when comparing dose and price.
A product containing 1,000 mg of a magnesium compound does not necessarily provide 1,000 mg of magnesium.
Citrate has relatively clear absorption evidence
NIH’s Office of Dietary Supplements notes that magnesium forms that dissolve well in liquid tend to be more completely absorbed.
It specifically identifies magnesium citrate, aspartate, lactate and chloride among forms that small studies have found to be more bioavailable than magnesium oxide and magnesium sulfate.
That gives citrate a fairly defensible evidence position.
It does not mean every citrate product is automatically superior to every other magnesium formulation.
Human citrate studies reinforce that position
A randomized double-blind study compared citrate, magnesium oxide and an amino-acid-chelate preparation in healthy adults.
Participants received 300 mg of elemental magnesium per day for 60 days.
Citrate produced the greatest mean serum magnesium concentration among the tested preparations after both acute and chronic supplementation, and urinary measurements also supported stronger absorption than oxide.
The study is useful evidence for citrate.
It should not be misrepresented as a definitive magnesium-citrate-versus-modern-magnesium-glycinate trial.
The amino-acid chelate tested in that study should not simply be renamed glycinate without evidence that the formulations are equivalent.
Glycinate has human evidence too
Lack of a strong direct comparison does not mean magnesium glycinate is unstudied.
A 2025 randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial studied magnesium bisglycinate in 155 adults reporting poor sleep quality.
Participants received 250 mg of elemental magnesium per day or placebo for four weeks.
The bisglycinate group experienced a statistically greater improvement in insomnia-severity scores than the placebo group.
The size of the additional effect was small.
That tells us magnesium bisglycinate has human clinical evidence for that specific context.
It does not tell us whether citrate would have performed better, worse or similarly.
A placebo comparison cannot answer a form-versus-form question
This is one of the most important distinctions on the page.
If a study shows:
magnesium glycinate > placebo
that does not establish:
magnesium glycinate > magnesium citrate.
The comparator determines what the experiment can actually tell us.
Bextera therefore separates form-specific efficacy evidence from direct comparative evidence.
There is some research containing both forms
A 2018 repeated crossover study in healthy participants included magnesium citrate and magnesium bisglycinate alongside magnesium oxide and a proprietary sucrosomial magnesium formulation.
The study measured short-term changes in magnesium concentrations after supplementation.
It provides useful evidence that both forms have been examined within the same human experiment.
But the study’s central purpose and reported conclusions focused primarily on the proprietary sucrosomial formulation.
It is not strong enough to support a sweeping claim that citrate definitively beats bisglycinate or vice versa.
What about the claim that glycinate is gentler?
This is probably the most common commercial distinction.
Magnesium glycinate is regularly marketed as causing fewer gastrointestinal effects.
Magnesium citrate is also commonly associated with laxative effects, particularly at larger amounts or when used in products intended for bowel evacuation.
But those observations should not be converted into a universal head-to-head tolerability ranking without appropriate trials.
Dose matters.
Elemental magnesium matters.
Individual susceptibility matters.
The complete formulation matters.
And magnesium citrate used as an ordinary nutritional supplement is not automatically equivalent to a high-dose citrate laxative preparation.
Bextera will therefore mark tolerability superiority as insufficiently established until stronger comparative evidence supports it.
“Better absorbed” also needs a comparator
A supplement can be more bioavailable than magnesium oxide without being proven more bioavailable than every other magnesium form.
That sounds obvious, but it is a common evidence error.
The NIH evidence gives magnesium citrate a reasonably strong position versus less soluble forms such as oxide.
That does not prove citrate beats glycinate.
Likewise, evidence that glycinate is absorbed does not prove that it beats citrate.
The correct answer depends on the comparison actually performed.
Product formulation can matter as much as the form name
Two products bearing the words “magnesium glycinate” may still differ in:
- elemental magnesium per serving;
- number of capsules required;
- additional magnesium forms;
- excipients;
- serving instructions;
- cost;
- certification or testing evidence.
The same applies to citrate.
A chemical-form label is therefore only one field in the product record.

For commercial products, we will compare:
- magnesium form;
- elemental magnesium per serving;
- number of capsules or amount of powder required;
- cost per 100 mg elemental magnesium;
- other active ingredients;
- independently verifiable testing or certification.
That produces a much cleaner comparison than assigning a winner based on the words printed on the front of the bottle.
So which form wins?
On the evidence available, a universal winner would be an overclaim.
Magnesium citrate has the clearer established human bioavailability record and is specifically recognized in NIH’s evidence summary as a relatively well-absorbed form.
Magnesium glycinate/bisglycinate has human clinical research, but evidence demonstrating that it is categorically better absorbed or better tolerated than citrate remains limited.
That distinction may change as better comparative trials appear.
For now, the evidence supports ranking the certainty of the claims rather than ranking the two forms themselves.
